Many thanks to those of you that were able to come to last weeks session, things are really starting to get moving. We watched the 1929 Russian film Man with a Movie Camera which gave us some good ideas – especially ways to manipulate imagery and how captivating the everyday can be. There have been a few revisions to the plan and some further character developments.
We have fixed on the name Amble Crocklepot. Amble (which means slow walk) is from a place far far away called Shonite. He comes down to Dover (in some sort of flying machine? TBC) and collects images/ photographs of all the things people do in Dover everyday. He always carries equipment for seeing on him: cameras/ video cameras/ lenses and binoculars. He takes these images back to Shonite where he processes them (orders/ classifies and collages) in order to learn from them. He sometimes gets this terribly wrong – brushing his cheeks with a toothbrush/ eating spaghetti out of a teapot with a spade.
The plan is to make 16 very short minute-long films that relate to the things he is doing and learning. Ideas so far, include: an introduction episode where something washes up on Shonite that inspires him to find out more about Dover. Then perhaps 10-14 short episodes of him learning to do various things: toothbrushing/ spaghetti eating/ learning a sport (swimming)/ drinking tea/ learning to knit, sew and make etc./ balloons and flight and the sky/ gardening/ to be continued………….. And a final concluding episode? The film will have a musical soundtrack (directed by Chris) and the storyline will be created by writing short sentences on blackboards.
I think that’s it for now. Just a reminder that the next session is on the 16th of June. Please bring any photographs you have taken and lots and lots of bonkers ideas!!!
Esther and I were wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting for an hour on the 16th between 12 and 1 to do an Oxfam shop trawl and try to find some sort of costume for Amble? If so, let me know and we can arrange a spot to meet.
All the Best Lucy and Esther
